Robyn Roberson

I am from the Gros Ventre Indian reservation in Ft. Belknap, Montana, located in north central Montana; I grew up, however, in western Montana in the Flathead valley, bordered by the Rocky Mountain range. I love the mountains, so Humboldt keeps me from being too homesick. If I were tech savvy, I could include a Google map showing my home, and if I had a digital camera, I’d include a cool picture of myself at home (not this avatar gal). After ATI, I bet I can do this. Oh... I was involved with RWP about five summers ago.

I have a Multiple Subject and Single Subject credential, as well as an MA in English. I taught middle school in Napa and Vallejo many years ago. I have yet to teach high school, but that will probably have to wait because I love teaching at College of the Redwoods.

Music plays a big part in my life. To begin, my favorite era of music is the alternative/grunge scene. I lived in Seattle during the early 90s when it all began! My favorite bands include Soundgarden, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Mudhoney, and Pearl Jam. But, I am a metal chick at heart: Ozzy, Metallica, Mudvayne... After hearing fave music, new friends are oft surprised to learn that I grew up playing classical piano and flute (with minor dabbles in saxophone and bells) throughout K-12. At UofW, I minored in music theory and piano. Sadly, I haven't played much in the last decade. But I do have a guitar.

Despite my musical roots, I just cannot seem to learn how to play the darn thing!!! Thus, my dream career would be that of a classical/folk guitarist like W. Ackerman, N. Drake, A. deGrassi, A. Murdoch, P. Bensusan and M. Hedges.

My least favorite career includes anything done in a cubicle, from 8am – 5pm, 51 weeks a year. I’ve done that and I will never go back!

Extras:

My favorite word is hullabaloo; my least favorite is whatever, even though I find myself saying it quite often.

I hate the sound of chainsaws; I love the sound of anything that has to do with water: the ocean, sprinklers on my veggie garden, my dog lapping up her water, snow, a drippy faucet since I know I can fix it, and rain.

I love the poetry of Joy Harjo; Almanac of the Dead by Leslie Marmon Silko; the works of Cormac McCarthy; and yes… I am a Twilight mom - Team Jacob!

Do you still play the piano? I think it is a more difficult instrument than a guitar. I love the sound of water too, and in particular, the ocean. I cannot imagine not living near an ocean.
