Stephanie Strasser

My name is Stephanie Strasser but according to my marriage certificate it is now Stephanie Goldstein. I am just too lazy to get everything changed over (the list is endless and seems like a daunting task). I teach a 2/3 at Trinidad School. I have taught 7/8 PreAlgebra, 5th, 2nd and 3rd over the last 6 years at Trinidad.

I graduated with a BS in Marine Bio and Zoology, but was inspired by the dedicated teachers of Trinidad School and decided to get my credential. I have been excited to bring my passion of the ocean to the school and have helped Trinidad be a part of the MARE program (Marine Activities, Resource & Education program from Lawrence Hall of Science).

This is my second year being involved with the Redwood Writing Project. I was inspired at last summer's RWP to approach teaching writing in a new light. Writing is not one of my favorite activities and had trouble connecting kids with writing. At RWP, I learned many activities and teaching approaches that I have incorporated this last year. I am excited to embark on this year's ATI. Technology is one of my passions. My dad was a computer teacher and introduced me early to the tech world. He was probably one of the first identified hoarders due to his old computers stacked to the ceiling in his office. He still has our first apple IIc computer from 1984 with a 2 inch screen that I remember playing tennis on with green dotted stick figures.

A lot has changed in the tech world since I was little. I grew up with Atari ,video game publisher, playing frogger and astriods with the simple red button joystick. I remember being up late at night typing away and having to make multiple edits that took forever to print on our woodpecker printer because we didn't have spell check. Now, the video games look like real life and can probably control it with your mind;) and the printer takes seconds to print. And THANK GOD for spell check- it has saved my life. But I am glad I was introduced to the tech world when I was young because it is the way the world is run now. I enjoy learning the new gadgets that are out today and find that I have the "double click" mindset of trying, testing, failing and succeeding in new tech mediums.

I am concerned we are not teaching our students how to use the technology in appropriate ways and feel that there should be more dedication in setting tech goals for our students, especially primary students. Should we be teaching the 3 R's plus a T now? It seems that the medium of reading, writing and math are in the form of technology these days. So, I am looking forward to incorporate my new classroom blog site into my curriculum, as well as updating my website and learning new technology that will help my students be prepared for the world.

It would be fun to show your students that old computer and give them a history lesson on technology. It is funny to think of what they looked like and how simple they were. My son (age 19) knows that the internet wasn't always in existence, but it is hard for him to imagine the world without it.

I LOVE "dickbrain"! I wonder if most folks would deem it redundant or oxymoronic. . . .

Sorry. I couldn't help myself. It's the "runny farts" bit that destroyed my self-discipline.

Seriously, though, Stephanie, I am grateful for your generous bio and for your attention to both content and aesthetics. Your students are very, very, very lucky.
